During the festival, choreographer Marlene Monteiro Fretias presents two separate pieces. The dramatic dance piece Of Ivory and Flesh – statues also suffer takes its starting point in the ancient myth of Pygmalion – the sculptor who made a statue spring to life.

On the darkened stage, a dramatic and mysterious dance piece unfolds. Choreographer Marlene Monteiro Fretias presents a grotesque dance performance with percussion music and terrified figures, constantly moving to the beat of the music. Puppets, or perhaps wound-up music box figures come to mind. Three musicians play cymbals, jazz or classical music. They are hybrids covered in white make-up, they are birdmen or mechanical toy soldiers.

In Of Ivory and Flesh – statues also suffer, everything on stage – including Marlene Monteiro Fretias and her actors and musicians – are turned into statues. The myth of Pygmalion is constantly present. It is a story from the Greek mythology where the cynical sculptor Pygmalion loved and cherished one of his statues so much that it turned from ivory into a living breathing being.

In the performance stone, wax, tree, metal, ivory and other materials are used in order to create bodies and figures. Regardless of motive or form, this physical and emotional creation is a way of stimulating life, while cheating death – just like Pygmalion did.

Marlene Monteiro Freitas is a dancer and choreographer from Cape Verde. She is considered one of the most talented choreographers of her generation and has rapidly established herself as one of the most interesting and sought after performing arts artists in Europe. Trained at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels and at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, where she is also currently residing. Monteiro Freitas didn’t start her formal dance training until the age of 18. Before this she had only danced with her friends, inspired by dance moves from TV series or by clips from music videos. In 2004 she graduated from dance school and a year later she presented her first choreography to an audience.
During this year’s festival we present two pieces by Marlene Monteiro Freitas, don’t miss Jaguar presented at Atalante on August 21-22.
