During the festival, choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas presents two separate pieces. In the extravagant duet Jaguar, mechanical and artificial movements and black humour are some of the key ingredients.

Jaguar is a dance and theatre performance where the two main characters on stage act like puppets in the hands of someone else. Who is really in charge? Along with German dancer Andreas Merk, Monteiro Freitas creates something that is twisted, energetic and strangely frenzied.

Here irony and black humour meet in a dark and silent cinema-like adventure. The audience are treated to matching white tennis outfits, David Bowie, lovers bickering and a visit to the subconscious.

It is important, says Monteiro Freitas, to understand that every aspect of the performance is equally thought through and important for the experience – regardless if it’s the choreography, music, light, sound, costume or makeup. By working with influence and emotions rather than direction, Monteiro Freitas and Merk create something that can not be expressed in words, images or movement.

Since the premiere in the autumn of 2015, Jaguar has toured all over Europe. When the performance was presented in Stockholm during spring 2016, Svenska Dagbladets reviewer wrote “An entertaining and insane clash between nature, control and construction”.

Marlene Monteiro Freitas is a dancer and choreographer from Cape Verde. She is considered one of the most talented choreographers of her generation and has rapidly established herself as one of the most interesting and sought after performing arts artists in Europe. Trained at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels and at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, where she is also currently residing.

Monteiro Freitas didn’t start her formal dance training until the age of 18. Before this she had only danced with her friends, inspired by dance moves from TV series or by clips from music videos. In 2004 she graduated from dance school and a year later she presented her first choreography to an audience.

During this year’s festival we present two pieces by Marlene Monteiro Freitas, don’t miss Of Ivory and Flesh presented at Folkteatern on August 24-25.
