André & Dorine
Kulunka Teatro
Comedy, tragedy, drama, masque – this unique production is not easy to categorize. But one thing is certain, and that is that it grips audiences as the masterpiece it is.
André and Dorine have lived together for many years; their love is now routine. Like many other couples, these two aging artists have begun to take each other for granted and a certain indifference has taken root. But everything changes when a serious illness invades their lives. Suddenly it becomes important to remember, to recreate and revive the love that has kept them united through all their years together.
André & Dorine is about love and forgetfulness. It is a moving portrayal of lifelong togetherness and of the human need to keep memory alive. This performance is also a heartwarming tribute to the ability of theatre to portray the most intimate connections between people.
With the help of highly expressive masks, three actors bring fifteen characters alive. Although the performers are silent, there is never any doubt about what’s going on between the two elderly people. Their daily lives as well as the challenges of dementia are performed with infallible timing. No one can misunderstand the story nor the psychology here, despite the absence of words. Comic moments are crystal clear, although the laughter gets caught in your throat. André & Dorine is an emotional roller coaster and, thanks to its bittersweet mix of sorrow and humor, the show offers a performing arts experience not easily forgotten.
Although André & Dorine is wordless, the manuscript is important for Kulunka Teatro. It was created through a collective artistic process and painstakingly constructed. Its wealth of detail is probably the key to the strong sense of recognition that the work has evoked around the globe. The production is understood by all, regardless of language or culture, and the piece has met with success in over thirty countries.
Kulunka Teatro was founded in 2010 in the Basque region of Spain. The group members are unified by their great interest in experimenting with the various languages of theatre. Their goal-oriented work, aimed at achieving significant theatre for all audiences, has received a lot of attention and resulted in numerous prizes. André & Dorine was the group’s first production, still on tour, thirteen years after its premiere.
