Four women lose all their inhibitions - they laugh out loud, screech, dance and prance, in a cacophonous, joyous and edgy scenic explosion. This messy mix of corporeal grimaces, sounds and chants will make you marvel, giggle, laugh. You’ll be befuddled and bewildered. What is actually happening here?
They sit in a row at a table. Their hair is fastened to the ceiling with hatchets and axes. It is a baffling scene, reminiscent of a medieval torture chamber. But instead of cries of suffering, they burst out in passionate song.
The performance Muyte Maker praises unruly bodies. Through constantly flowing transformations, the representation of women is destabilized. Exploring joyfulness through movement, a statement is made about the potential of happiness for creativity and resistance. With the aid of medieval imagery, trivial poetry and grotesque paintings, this performance pays tribute to rebellious, extraordinary as well as ordinary bodies.
Dancer and choreographer Flora Détraz, educated in Portugal and France, has been developing her own pieces since 2013. With Muyte Maker she continues her explorations of the relationship between voice and movement. Détraz presents a euphoric and grotesque tribute to happiness. Overflowing with creativity, she resists whatever rules apply, whatever norms that may limit decency or morality.
