PIGMENTS
To catch and release each other fifteen meters above street level for almost an entire hour without touching the ground – that’s a challenge even for the French group CirkVOST, one of the world’s foremost trapeze troupes, constantly seeking out new challenges for their high-flying art. With their spectacular performance PIGMENTS they dig deeply into the foundation of all aerial acrobatics – trust and group dynamics.
The question they ask themselves appears straightforward enough: What is a group? Whoever tries to answer will discover a series of new questions, far from easy to unravel. Like the question of a group’s strength, which somehow tends to be greater than the collective power of the individual members. Also: the more integrity and individual strength possessed by the members of a group, the more solid their united expression. Why is that? What happens when a person is sucked into a group? And why is it that as soon as you feel seriously at home in a gathering you feel the urge to run away from it?
Perhaps these questions are not just significant for acrobats, but are even relevant in some sense for our fragmented world. Individual initiatives can be both essential and mortally dangerous. No progress is possible without disturbing the balance of a group, but an individual whose challenge comes at the wrong moment can create a catastrophe for all concerned.
In any case, whoever thinks too long about these questions will surely reach a higher level of confusion. So we’re lucky that the twelve passionate trapeze artists in CirkVOST spend almost an hour personifying the problem for flabbergasted audiences.
